About Marshall Grain

Being a small-town, family-run business is rare in today’s bustling society, but Marshall Grain Company and its staff work together to deliver convenient, quick, and courteous service to customers, both new and returning. Now celebrating its 47th year in business, Marshall Grain Company proudly welcomes its third generation into the operations. “As the community grows, so do we,” states Barry Marshall.

Located on the west side of Amanda, the large grain bins are hard to miss while driving through town. With the office situated just off Main Street, Marshall Grain offers a convenient location for its customers and continues to support the community it serves.

A Rich History of Growth

In 1977, the old Houston Grain Mill went up for sale and was purchased by Paul Marshall. When asked why he decided to purchase the feed mill after working as a John Deere implement distributor and salesman for 14 years, Paul said, “I wanted a career change, so I decided to pursue something different within the agricultural business.”

Just a year later, Amanda Grain, located nearby, suffered a grain elevator fire, leading its owners to sell the business. In 1978, Paul Marshall purchased Amanda Grain, restored it, and merged the two businesses into one. His son, Barry Marshall, joined the business and managed the Amanda location until the two offices were combined, creating the Marshall Grain Company we see today.

Community Connections

Paul Marshall was warmly welcomed into the community. Many customers who originally worked with Houston Grain continued their patronage at Marshall Grain, with some families spanning multiple generations. “Over the years, we have developed friendships with our customers and those in our community. We are privileged enough to say that our customers have become like family to us and us to them,” says Barry.

The 1980s brought challenges, including what Paul refers to as the “Ag Depression.” Despite the difficulties, Marshall Grain persevered and emerged stronger. Today, the business continues to thrive and expand.

Recent Success and Expansion

Over the past several years, Marshall Grain has made significant advancements, including two dry fertilizer storage expansions, attracting new customers to the area. In spring 2024, the company completed an office and showroom expansion, which has been a fantastic addition to their operations.

Marshall Grain continues to distribute feeds and products in growing demand while maintaining customer favorites. “Almost weekly, we have a new customer come through the door and say they had no idea we were here, and they end up surprised at all of the pet, livestock, farm, home, and garden products that we offer and have access to,” says Barry.

More Than a Farm Supply Store

Carrying over 300 products, including birdseed, lawn care products, pet foods, and garden supplies, Marshall Grain stands out for its personal service and product expertise. “We are proud of our personal service and product knowledge that we provide each customer. We are able to recommend the product that best suits the customer’s needs—from 4-H projects to lawn care. If we don’t have the answer or the product, we know where to look,” Barry states.

A Message of Gratitude

Barry concludes, “We would like to express our gratitude to the community, the surrounding communities, and to all for their patronage. We welcome you to stop by to see how we can help you.”

Marshall Grain Company remains a testament to resilience, community spirit, and the enduring value of family-run businesses.
